#87- Unseen, Unspoken, Unwell- When Resilience Becomes a Mask, Part 2

May 16, 2025

What if your strength has become your silence?

For a long time, Dr. Phyllis felt proud when people called her resilient. The more praise she got, the better she felt about herself. She thought she was stacking value and worth in the eyes of others. Her resilience became her identity, and external validation became her measure of success.

But resilience doesn’t mean you ignore your feelings. It’s not about living behind a mask. True resilience doesn’t hide the cracks or vulnerabilities.

Here are three signs that you might be wearing resilience as a mask:

  1. You’re emotionally numb.
  2. You downplay your feelings, convincing yourself that everything is fine when it’s not. You lose touch with who you are beyond your roles, and the emotional toll starts to build up.
  3. Delayed feelings.
  4. When you suppress pain or discomfort, you can’t deal with it. The longer you avoid acknowledging the hurt, the harder it becomes to process it.
  5. You become resentful.
  6. If you’re always hiding your pain behind strength, resentment can start to grow. Unaddressed emotions lead to bitterness and frustration.

Resilience isn’t about masking pain or pretending everything is okay. It’s about acknowledging the hurt and still standing strong, without hiding the truth.

When you rely only on you for resilience, it’s not sustainable. You’ll eventually hit a wall. You’ll burn out, become disconnected, and start spiraling. True strength isn’t about being invincible; it’s about facing your struggles with authenticity, vulnerability, and without the mask.

Quotes from Today’s Episode:

“Resilience is not about hiding pain… Resilience is about honoring truth.”

“Resilience doesn’t mean that you’re not human, that you don’t acknowledge your feelings.”

“When you wear this resilience, this sense of strength as a mask, you become disconnected from who you are.”
